Self Retracting Lanyards

Self retracting lanyards are part of a comprehensive Fall Arrest System—they serve as a connection between the harness and the anchor point, with an internal mechanism that can sense a sudden drop and will rapidly activate a braking system in case of a fall.

History and Benefits

Self retracting lanyards can trace their roots back to the early 1960s. These devices were used to prevent sudden drops with what were known as individual safety elevators. At the time, however, they were surprisingly unpopular—early versions were very heavy and inconvenient to use.

Fortunately, modern technology has offered significant improvements to these devices. While some still need to be heavy to conform with certain regulations, it is much more common for them to be lightweight and easy to transport.

Modern self retracting lanyards now offer a number of benefits. Perhaps most significantly, self-retracting lanyards brake much more rapidly than standard lanyards. This creates a much safer work environment, as there is a significantly reduced chance of crashing into other objects or hitting the ground. Self-retracting lanyards will activate the braking system after less than a two foot drop, reducing dangerous free falling.

Additionally, self-retracting lanyards make it much easier to rescue someone who has fallen. While standard lanyards may become tangled and need to be retracted manually, self-retracting lanyards are significantly less likely to become tangled and will retract themselves.
