At Webb-Rite Safety, we’ve provided high-quality fall protection equipment and systems for over 20 years. Our broad selection of standard products ranges from carabiners, harnesses, and lanyards to rescue gear. For customers with highly specific or unique needs, we offer capabilities for fully custom solutions. Regardless of the size of the job, our team is committed to ensuring that our customers receive the best safety solution for their workers and worksites.
One of our core product offerings is fall arrest systems. These systems may include a variety of components—including anchorage points, body harnesses, connectors, deceleration device, lanyards, and vertical and horizontal lifelines—all of which are used to ensure employees remain protected from falls and injuries when working and walking in elevated spaces. Below we outline the importance of employing these systems in jobsites and the product solutions we offer.
The Importance of Portable Fall Protection Systems for Your Jobsite
In 1970, the United States passed the Occupational Safety and Health Act, which compelled companies in the construction and other industrial sectors to implement measures to protect their employees. Today, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires employers to provide employees with adequate fall protection equipment when working in elevated workspaces.
The definition of an elevated workspace varies from industry to industry. According to OSHA, fall protection equipment should be provided to employees at elevations at and above 4 feet in general industry applications, 5 feet in shipyards, 6 feet in construction sites, and 8 feet in longshoring operations. Additionally, it should be provided when working over dangerous equipment and machinery, regardless of the fall distance.
Fall protection equipment is an umbrella term encompassing a broad selection of devices, equipment, and systems, all of which are designed and constructed to prevent employees from falling from elevated spaces and/or protecting them from injury in the event of a fall. One of the most common forms of fall protection equipment is portable fall protection systems. These freestanding and mobile systems are used in outdoor environments where there is no access to permanent and sturdy overhead anchor points and indoor environments where work is not confined to a specific area. Compared to permanent or passive fall protection equipment, such as guardrails, netting, lifelines, rigid rails or safety gates, they are better able to accommodate changing work conditions.
Some of the industries that regularly employ portable fall protection equipment are:
- Advertising (e.g., billboards)
- Construction
- Entertainment
- General Industry
- Hospitality/Recreation
- Military & Defense
- Road & Highway Maintenance
Types of Mobile Fall Arrest Systems
We offer a wide range of mobile fall arrest systems to accommodate the needs of various industrial applications. Our product offerings include:
- Anchor Bladder: This water-filled anchor serves as an attachment point for a lifeline. It features a strong and durable hot-bonded body with stitched and autoclave-cured seams and a combined fill/drain valve. Key technical specifications include a maximum fill capacity of 105 gallons and pressure loading of 0.42 pounds/square inch.
- Aquatank System: This fall arrest system employs the use of water-filled counterweights and a jib and mast. It can accommodate single-point anchorage setups for up to two workers or, when multiple units are set in series, a horizontal lifeline system setup.
- SkyRail C-Frame System: This mobile fall arrest system is available in fixed-height (15 feet to 23 feet) or adjustable-height (up to 34 feet) variations. Other key features include a heavy-duty jack for positioning and swivel lock wheels with brake locks to maintain current positioning. It accommodates manual or vehicle-assisted movement.
- Fixed SkyMast: This freestanding anchor system features a fixed-height, counterweighted mast design. It accommodates up to two workers at heights up to 20 or 25 feet.
- Mobile Personnel Platform: This portable personnel platform—also sometimes referred to as a portable work platform or portable safety ladder—allows personnel to access elevated structures and equipment (e.g., tanks) safely. It has a durable but lightweight design that facilitates repositioning throughout the worksite. Other key features include extended guard rails, tool storage containers, and temporary pipe flange storage compartments.
- Mobile SkyMast: This counterweight mast system features an adjustable mast (between 15 feet to 24 feet) and a swiveling jib (up to 30 degrees). It can accommodate up to two single-point anchors.
- Portable Frame Counterweight System (PFCW): This fall protection system features a horizontal rigid rail and trolley design with a portable support structure. It employs concrete or steel counterweights to offset the fall arrest forces.
- SkyRail System: This mobile fall arrest solution provides 10-feet of horizontal worker movement at heights of 20- or 25-feet. It offers maximum stability with outriggers with leveling jacks, yet the compact design allows access into tight areas. It is suitable for supporting up to two workers.
